What it actually tastes like

Most beef jerky sold in this country is either too sweet, too soft, or both. Jack Link's Original sits in a better spot. It's chewy without being a workout for your jaw, smoky without tasting artificial, and salty in a way that makes you want another handful rather than a glass of water. Honestly, it's one of the more satisfying snacks you can keep at your desk.

I had a bag on a long train journey once, rationing it out over about two hours, which tells you something. Good jerky disappears fast. This one made me slow down and actually enjoy it.

Who it's for (and who it isn't)

If you're into the gym, do long drives, or just hate crisps, this is a solid buy. Each 25g bag has around 11g of protein, which isn't nothing. The 12-pack format makes sense for stashing in a bag or a drawer.

That said, if you're after a bargain with a big slash through the price, this isn't that. No discount here. It's just a decent product at a fair price, which sometimes is reason enough.

Vegans and anyone who finds the texture of dried meat a bit grim should obviously swerve it entirely.

The one reservation

The bags are small. Like, properly small. Twenty-five grams sounds fine until you open one and it's gone in four bites. You will eat two in a row, guaranteed. Factor that into your sums.
